I suspect there is some hard explanation of what it is: mother's heartbeat, brainwaves or some such. It's not simple. How about Toccata and Fugue BWV 565 (Bach)? How about Edith Piaf? More on this later.
I wanted to explore the transmission also, the meme. Maybe all the musicians that followed Robert Johnson got touched in the same way. I dunno.
maybe although i dont really hold with all this spooky stuff about Robert Johnson (promulgated largely by Clapton himself). I've got all of Johnson's recordings in a boxset which I rarely listen to and for good reason. Clapton (and others) reworking of them is what makes them great.
